More rain than sun

While we chose a month stay in Panama City Beach, FL for our first stop, it has proven to be not as we expected. Apparently this part of the Gulf of Mexico is a superhighway for thunderstorms, wind and lots and lots of rain. I am not sure how many inches we have seen since our arrival April 1st but suffice it to say that there has easily been more rainy days than sunny ones since our arrival.

Ruth is soggy.

Brought our bikes, not a boat.

We had one severe storm that produced a couple of actual tornadoes a few miles away. That was somewhat scary. We happened to be away from the RV during that time, but it was so rainy and windy that we took refuge in a CVS. There were 4 of us, hunkered down in the dark when the power went out. Luckily, we all emerged unscathed. As a treat for being so close to a tornado, we treated ourselves to breakfast at Tudor's Biscuit World and it was just what was needed.

Hanging at the CVS with the power out as the storm passes.

My biscuits and gravy, Mike's breakfast sandwich was gone before I could get a pic.

Our first week here was very clearly the last week of spring break for lots of families with middle to high school age children.  Mike called it a "puberty convention".  Everywhere you drove, tried to eat or get some sand between your toes was packed with human beings.  We were very busy organizing the RV the first week so we just stayed around the campsite and waited for spring breakers to go back to their respective cold weather cities.

We have had a chance to see some of the area though. We are close enough to ride our bikes to the start of the tourtist beach area and we have pretty far west to explore Rosemay, Santa Rosa and Seaside beach areas.  The beaches here are sugary white sand and the gulf has been churned up due to the storms. Nothing better than roaring waves at the beach.

We did find a lovely little respite from the tourist throngs for a 30th Anniversay lunch at a place called The Old Florida  Fish House where I had a phenomenal Grouper Rueben sandwich and a rather tasty mojito. Yum.

There are still some scars from Hurricane Michael visible as you drive around the older parts of Panama City and the beach.  Pier Park is the main tourist and shopping mecca not far from where we are.  It has every store imagineable.  We have visited its Target and Walmart many times getting settled in to the RV.

One one good weather day we explored Conservation Park.  It was a lovely nature walk through the spindlly pines of the panhandle.

We hosted some friends who were passing through for a couple of days during the worst of the storms. We played Canasta in the clubhouse, ate, drank and even tried our luck at Escape Manor escape room. It was a fun activity to pass the time on another undesireable weather day.  We had fun in spite of the weather.

As I type this it is raining yet again and forecasted to do so most of the weekend.  I guess if this keeps up I may post again sooner rather than later.

Ruth's Rubber Meets the Road

Well the time has come for us to coax Ruth out of her resting state and take us on our several month roadtrip, odyssey, sojurn...whatever you want to call it. We made our first reservation for this Western Round Up trip back in January '21 and ended up with a 6500+ mile trip covering approximately 200 nights. We will depart from Florida and go as far north as West Glacier, MT, as far west as Bend, OR and back south to Durango, CO. Currently our planned stops end in Durango in mid October. We will figure out what happens after Durango at some point on our journey. As I have on our past trips, I will log on from time to time and share some of our travel experiences. We have a lot of very interesting locations planned and I am sure there will be stories to tell along the way. For those of you who have followed us in the past on the Fortuitous Hiatus blog, I have started this new adventure with a new name and blog location. Hopeless RoamAntics can be followed at the following link https://hopelessroamantics.blogspot.com/ going forward. If you would like to enter your email in the "Follow by Email" box on the right-hand of the blog, you will be notified of new posts when the occur. Thanks for stopping by...stay safe.
